Extending Hauling Operations on Thawing Roads by Using Road- Friendly Technologies
نویسنده
چکیده
In the springs of 2000, the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC) undertook a series of studies to investigate the potential of using a combination of technologies to extend log hauling operations during the traditional spring break-up period. During spring break-up, thin pavement roads are weakened, resulting in the application of government-imposed load restrictions to prevent road damage from heavy haul traffic. These load restrictions typically result in the suspension of log hauling operations for a period of six to ten weeks. The undertaken studies examined the use of Central Tire Inflation (CTI) systems in combination with a variety of axle arrangements on log trucks to minimize road damage while hauling full loads during the traditional load restriction period.

A Visual Sensing Approach to Estimate Material Hauling Cycles in Heavy Construction and Surface Mining Jobsites
Dump trucks are the main mean for hauling earth material within and outside of the construction and open-pit mining jobsites. The real-time monitoring of the material transportation trips is beneficial for proactive equipment management, volume estimation, and productivity measurement. The traditional manual observation is tedious, non-real-time, and expensive; therefore remote sensing technolo...

One of the serious damages of tremendous earthquakes is the damage to bridges as the major components in an arterial road network, as relief operation is interrupted following cutting roads. Regardless of the magnitude and severity of an earthquake, other factors are also important in the strength and seismic performance of concrete bridges. Freezing-thawing cycles are among the factors, whi...
متن کاملToward a Reasoning Service to Improve Routable Road Maps by Deriving Road Attributes from Telematics Data
Detailed road maps are essential for efficient routing of vehicles. However, available data on roads is not always sufficient to support efficient routing, especially in the domain of agricultural vehicles, where route networks are not maintained by official mapping agencies. Efficient route planning can help reducing the cost of agricultural operations such as harvesting. We propose an approac...
متن کاملSpecial Issue on New Applications and Advanced Methodologies for Road Safety and Simulation
Safety and in particular road safety have become major concerns worldwide, due to the rapid growth in the number of vehicles and traffic accidents. Road fatalities are the result of several joint factors: they can be caused by drivers' errors, by vehicles' malfunctions and by issues related to roads environment. In the U.S., in 2010 there were an estimated 5.419.000 crashes (30.296 fatal crashe...

Extended abstract 1- Introduction A bare surface on forest roads is created due to road construction. This surface is the main source of erosion and sediment yield to streams in forest areas. The increase of sediment in streams causes dramatic damage to the quality of water ecosystems and the life of aquatic organisms. Therefore, road engineers should pay attention not only to the cost of roa...
